Powerline Communications (PLC)

Power Line Communications (PLC) is that technical solution through which the electric energy supplying networks are used as a simple transportation way for digital data too. Consequently, besides Internet, telephony and other sorts of data, real-time data coming from household and industrial users' meters can be directly administrated.

Through PLC (Power Line Communication) communication system, electronic communication services are provided, having as transmission support for usefull signal, the electric voltage networks of low and medium voltage. The frequencies used for this type of communication are between 3 – 148.5 kHz, for narrow band applications, and 1 – 30 MHz, for wide band applications. One of the PLC technology advantages is that it allows multiple applications to work on the same infrastructure, electric infrastructure, which exists both inside and outside buildings. PLC applications are as varied as possible: automatic reading of electricity meters, telephony, wide band Internet, as well as potential application for home automation. The new generation PLC also allows “triple-play�: data, voice and video services provided together or other services such as: video-on-demand, High Definition TV streaming, on-line gaming, HiFi Audio Streaming, on-line education, tele-working etc.

Narrow band PLC applications:

• analogical telephony and fax (up to 4 posts for one residence)
• house or electrical equipments automation and control
• automatic reading of electricity meters (but not only)
• remote surveillance

Wide band PLC applications:

• wide band Internet access (4 Mbps through existing equipments, up to 20- 30 Mbps through prototype equipments)
• digital telephony

Home PLC applications:

• Internet connection partition (Home LAN)
• TV connexion partition
• PC resources distribution: printers, storage, other options
• AV signal distribution

With the help of this technology, our company has developed and tested a public lighting administration system which has as main goal the municipality's costs optimization with electric energy and subsequently cuts of over 30%.
