Municipal Wireless
One of the most evident realities of the 21st century is the continuous need for communication. Easy access, permanent flow, wide area coverage and user's security have placed telecommunications among the basic needs of modern man, along with water, gas, sewage and electricity. These are the premises for the municipal wireless concept, which essentially involves the transformation of cities into vast areas with universal access to internet through the usage of wireless technology. The main advantages of wireless technology are the large coverage area, reliability, higher speeds, higher data transfer security and low costs.

Flashnet is one of the first Romanian companies that has developed such a system, entirely functional in certain areas of Brasov and soon to be extended across the entire city.

A wireless network consists of all the equipments interconnected through radio waves, infrared or by using other solutions that do not use cables to transmit data. Today, the number of these networks significantly increased worldwide, municipal wireless representing the preferred communication solution. Ever-growing popularity of wireless connections is due to their obvious advantages (mobility, flexibility, ease of installation, reduced maintenance costs and scalability), that recommend WLAN as the preferred solution.

Some of the advaantages of a Municipal Wireless network are:
  • Municipal Wireless system implementation does not require civil works.
  • Network coverage can be extended easily with minimal costs.
  • Municipal Wireless provides internet access in areas where other solutions can not be used for various reasons (technical, geographical, etc.).
  • Opportunities to develop eGovernment applications (public inquires to the City Hall, online tax-payments, etc.), eHealth (remote medical services, online examinations, etc.) and eLearning (remote electronic learning).
  • Commissioning of online information centers for citizens and tourists.
  • Traffic monitoring, increased pedestrian safety, reduced crime rate without additional investments.
  • Free internet access at any time and in any place.
  • Simplified and convenient online payment of bills and taxes.
Brasov is one of the first cities in Romania to have a municipal wireless network. The project was developed and implemented by Flashnet. To date, 31 antennas were already installed, following the system to be extended across the entire city in the near future .
Thus, municipal wireless network represents the first step in adopting the concept of "digital city", a complex structure based upon advanced communication.
